According to the LSU Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety, 1,321 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes, 81,775 in injury crashes, and 200,337 in property-damage-only crashes.
These numbers reflect that about 9% of all licensed drivers in Louisiana were in a crash last year.
Of those crashes:
- 69% of fatal crashes were estimated to be alcohol-related.
- 57% of the 42,351 injury crashes involved alcohol.
- 68% of the 105,284 property damage-only crashes involved alcohol.
According to the Center for Analytics & Research in Transportation Safety, speeding was also a factor in nearly one-third of all crash deaths in Louisiana, narrowly trailing impaired driving as one of the major causes of crashes, injuries, and fatalities throughout Louisiana.
The third most common cause of car accidents, injuries, and fatalities in Louisiana is distracted driving. Nearly 175 people were killed in distracted driving accidents throughout the state, which is 2.4 times higher than the national rate.
Another Alarming Louisiana Car Accident Statistic: Lack of Safety Belts
According to last year’s car accident statistics, not wearing a safety belt was one of the leading causes of being killed in a crash. In cases where safety belt use is known, 48.7% of all occupants who died in a crash did not use a safety belt.
