Riding a Motorcycle with Helmet
At the Russell Law Firm, LLC, our Baton Rouge motorcycle accident attorneys know, according to the National Safety Council, motorcycle helmets are estimated to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle operators and 41% effective for motorcycle passengers.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that over the last 15 years, more than 25,000 lives have been saved by wearing motorcycle helmets.
Our East Baton Rouge Parish personal injury lawyers know that even with a helmet, motorcycle accidents can cause additional injuries, including serious internal injuries, organ damage, and neck and spine injuries. If you have been involved in a motorcycle accident caused by a negligent driver, we want to hear your story, so we can help you get your life back.
Am I Required to Wear a Helmet While Riding a Motorcycle in Louisiana?
Our state law requires all Louisiana motorcyclists and their passengers to wear a U.S. DOT-compliant motorcycle safety helmet secured by a chin strap when riding a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle.
The legislation says, “No person shall operate or ride upon any motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle unless the person is equipped with and is wearing on the head a safety helmet of the type and design manufactured for use by operators of such vehicles, which shall be secured properly with a chin strap while the vehicle is in motion. All such safety helmets shall consist of lining, padding, visor, and chin strap and shall meet such other specifications as shall be established by the commissioner.”
Motorcyclists continue to be over represented in traffic-related fatalities. Per vehicle miles traveled last year, motorcyclists are about 24 times more likely than people in passenger cars to die in a traffic crash.
If you or someone you love was injured or lost their life in a motorcycle accident caused by negligence, you deserve the opportunity to pursue the financial recovery you need to get your life back on track. We can help.
